Course Outline

  • Mother and baby staring at each other

    Introduction to Respectful Caregiving

Explore the origins and core principles of respectful parenting, grounded in the work of Dr. Emmi Pikler and Magda Gerber. We’ll examine the infant’s natural pace, and how observation, trust, and relationship-building lay the foundation for confident, attuned care.

  • A young child in a yellow striped shirt is crawling on a wooden outdoor play surface. In the background, there is a red toy motorcycle, a pink toy, and an adult figure near a brick house, with trees and greenery visible.

    Natural Motor Development

Learn why we honor a baby’s innate developmental sequence (and what that is) and how freedom of movement builds the child’s critical thinking, gross and fine motor skills, and self-confidence. We’ll explore how to create safe, spacious environments that support self-initiated, unhurried exploration.

  • Young child lying on a bed with a white cover and multiple pillows, one pink checkered, in a cozy bedroom setting.

    The Many Roles of Play

Discover how play serves as a powerful tool for learning, connection, and confidence. We’ll discuss how to support self-directed exploration from the start, create simple and engaging play spaces, and respect a baby’s attention without interrupting their flow.

  • A man with a dark beard gently holding a young child, pressing his face close to the child's cheek in an embrace.

    Attachment and Brain Development

Dive into the science of attachment and brain development, and learn how early, responsive relationships shape a baby’s lifelong capacity for connection. We’ll explore co-regulation, emotional attunement, and the everyday moments that nurture a secure foundation.

  • Close-up of a baby taking a bath, resting on a green mat with water on their shoulder, looking to the side with a gentle expression.

    Caregiving Routines

Daily routines like diapering, feeding, and bathing aren’t just chores — they’re opportunities to build trust and connection. In this session, we’ll get specific: how to change a diaper with respect, what to expect when feeding a newborn, and how to approach bathing in a way that honors your baby’s dignity. These moments add up, and we’ll show you how to make them count.

  • A young child sleeping peacefully on a black surface with half-closed eyes and a relaxed expression.

    Supporting Sleep and Language Development

This session covers two essentials in early parenting: sleep and communication. You’ll learn what to expect from infant sleep, how to support healthy habits from the start, and why talking with your baby from day one matters. We’ll also look at how to encourage language development through everyday interactions—without overstimulation or overwhelm.

  • A woman sitting on a couch holding a sleeping newborn baby wrapped in a green blanket at a hospital.

Navigating Adult Relationships After Baby arrives

Welcoming a baby can transform your identity, your partnership, and your support system. This session explores how to navigate those shifts with care—communicating clearly, sharing the load, and tending to your own well-being while caring for a new little person. Because raising a baby also means reimagining how we care for each other and ourselves.

  • A newborn baby lying in an incubator, wearing a hospital identification bracelet and a wristwatch, surrounded by blankets.

    The First Four Weeks

The early days are tender, intense, and often unpredictable. In this final session, we’ll talk about what to expect during the first month with your baby—from feeding and sleep patterns to emotional shifts—and how to create a supportive fourth trimester environment rooted in rhythms, not rigid schedules. Because those first few weeks set the tone for everything to come.

  • A pregnant woman and a man sitting on a beige couch, smiling at each other, in a cozy living room. The woman is wearing glasses and a brown sweater, with her hand on her belly. The man is wearing a white turtleneck and gray pants, with his hand on the woman's leg. There are small stuffed animals on the couch near them, and framed abstract art hanging on the wall behind them.

    Conversation Throughout

Though information will be presented each session, we will build in ample time for questions and conversations. This is not a lecture, podcast, or e-course, we want you to be able to connect personally to the content and to each other. We’re leaning into the gift that we are learning together in-person.
